Spanish EVOOs worth knowing by name

Spain is the world's largest producer of olive oil, with over 260 varieties of olive. Each region — Catalonia, Andalusia, Aragon — produces oils with entirely different characters. Your tasting will typically include a selection from across these regions.

Arbequina
Catalonia
Delicate, fruity and sweet. A gentle introduction — buttery with notes of fresh almond and apple.
Picual
Andalusia
Robust and peppery. One of Spain's most complex varieties — grassy, bitter and intensely fruity.
Hojiblanca
Córdoba
Balanced and elegant. Ripe fruit notes with a distinctive, pleasantly bitter finish and medium pepperiness.
Cornicabra
Castilla-La Mancha
Intense and persistent. High in polyphenols with a strong green fruit character and noticeable heat.
Argudell
Catalonia
Rare and exclusive. Light with aromatic herb notes — a little-known variety outside Catalonia that surprises every time.
+ More varieties
Spain-wide
Other exclusive brands and varieties also available — Acebuche, Empeltre, Manzanilla Sevillenca, Casoli Arbosana and others, depending on season and availability. Ask Elena when you enquire.

The exact selection varies by session and availability. Elena will confirm the oils chosen for your tasting in advance.

A memorable occasion for any gathering

About Spanish Gastro Larder Olive Oil Tastings

Spanish Gastro Larder was founded by Elena, a Londoner with deep roots in Spanish food culture. For years she has been sourcing premium extra virgin olive oils directly from small, award-winning producers across Catalonia, Andalusia and Aragon — estates that prioritise early harvest, cold extraction and organic practices over industrial yield.

Why olive oil tasting is growing in London

Much like wine in previous decades, extra virgin olive oil is experiencing a consumer awakening. Londoners are increasingly curious about provenance, flavour complexity and the genuine health benefits of high-quality EVOO versus the blended oils found on supermarket shelves. Private tasting experiences — particularly in the relaxed setting of someone's home — have become one of the most popular ways to explore this world for the first time.

What makes Spanish EVOO special?

Spain produces more olive oil than any other country — but quantity tells only part of the story. The diversity of Spanish olive varieties is extraordinary. Arbequina from Catalonia, Picual from Jaén, Hojiblanca from Córdoba, Cornicabra from Toledo — each variety, harvested at the right moment and extracted at low temperatures, produces an oil with a completely distinct flavour profile, colour and polyphenol content. Experiencing these side by side, with proper guidance, is the most direct way to understand the difference.

Is there a market for olive oil tasting in London?

Absolutely. London now has dedicated olive oil bars, tasting classes through ClassBento and Obby, and a growing number of private experience providers. Sessions typically run from £40–£65 per person. The home tasting format — where an expert brings the oils to you — remains underserved, particularly for Spanish producers, making Spanish Gastro Larder's offering genuinely distinctive.
